Programe:
Student Internships. ESA offers students a wide range of student internship options. Applicants should preferably be in their last or second to last year of a master’s degree. Many students take the opportunity of a student internship at ESA to prepare their thesis. In general, technical opportunities are available at ESTEC, ESOC, ESAC, ECSAT, ESRIN, EAC and ESEC (Redu). There are also a limited number of non-technical opportunities.

Young Graduate Trainee (YGT) Are you about to take your finals? Or do you already have your Master’s degree in the bag? If so, then you can apply to ESA as a ‘Young Graduate Trainee’ (YGT). This high-calibre programme lasts for one year and gives successful applicants an opportunity to gain valuable experience in the development and operation of space missions. As a Graduate Trainee, you’ll take on a responsible role in supporting a project, and benefit from the expertise of an ESA tutor.

ESA’s postdoctoral Research Fellowship programme (RF) aims to offer young scientists and engineers the possibility for two years to carry out research in a variety of disciplines related to space science, space applications or space technology. Applicants must have recently attained their doctorate in a field closely connected to space activities.

Proiecte practice:
ESA’s Fly Your Satellite! (FYS) programme is a recurring, hands-on programme designed and managed by the ESA Education Office in close collaboration with European Universities, with the objective to complement academic education and inspire, engage, and better prepare university students for a more effective introduction to their future professions in the space sector.

The Drop Your Thesis! (DYT) programme gives university students, from bachelor to PhD level, the opportunity to perform scientific or technological research in such microgravity conditions. The gravity levels that are obtained in ZARM Drop tower experiments are as low as 10-6g and last either 4.74 seconds (when the drop tower is used in drop mode) or about 9 seconds (when catapult mode is used). This is the same level that is attained for experiments on the International Space Station, and is enough for a multitude of scientific research opportunities.

The Fly Your Thesis! (FYT) programme gives master and PhD candidates the opportunity to fly their scientific experiment or technological research in microgravity conditions. The experiments can be related to fluid physics, chemistry, biology, material sciences, heat transfer and astrophysics. The parabolic flight campaign takes place on the Airbus A310 Zero-G, which is operated by Novespace from Bordeaux, France. Each campaign consists of a series of three flights of 30 parabolas each. These will provide about 20s of microgravity each.

The Spin Your Thesis! (SYT) programme offers university students (bachelor, master and PhD levels) the opportunity to perform scientific or technological research in hypergravity conditions in a number of fields such as biology, biochemistry, microbiology, optical physics, material sciences, fluid dynamics, geology and plasma physics. A Large Diameter Centrifuge (LDC) has been developed by ESA that can cater experiments in hypergravity conditions with levels ranging from 1 to 20 g. With 6 gondolas mounted on the long arms and 1 central gondola as a control experiment (1 g) this facility can provide, for example, a hypergravity environment for cells and plants, as well as physical science and technological experiments.

The Spin Your Thesis! – Human Edition (SYT-HE) programme offers university students (bachelor, master and PhD level) the opportunity to perform non-invasive experiments investigating the human physiological response to exercises employed on the International Space Station when performed in 1Gz (upright) and in simulated 1Gz on a human centrifuge.
